METRO SOUTH ARTS COUNCIL PRESENTS WORLD MUSIC, WORLD ART

 

Join Metro South Arts Council for a family-friendly event - World Music, World Art - featuring world music band Etniko and West African drumming specialist Adam Rugo on Saturday, May 29, from 6:00-9:30 pm at Crestwood Court ArtSpace #120.

 

The evening will begin at 6:00 pm on the family dance floor with the showing of “Playing for Change,” a film on the Peace through Music movement. West African and Afro-Caribbean hand drumming specialist Adam Rugo will lead a hands-on family drumming workshop from 6:30 – 7:30 pm. “Playing for Change” will be shown again from 7:30-8:00 pm on the family dance floor. Popular world-music band Etniko will perform from 8:00-9:30 pm. Art activities inspired by the world cultures in “Playing for Change” will be offered for children during the event.

 

Adam Rugo is a musician, teacher, composer, arranger, and instrument builder. He has performed and taught his own curriculum on African drumming, dance, geography, history, language, and culture in the majority of public and private schools throughout the St. Louis area. He has studied with many master drummers from West Africa and has performed nationally and internationally with master dancer Diadie Bathily. Rugo currently accompanies West African dance classes at Washington University, plays with world percussion group Nuclear Percussion Ensemble and rock band Madahoochi, and serves as Music Director for Circus Harmony at City Museum.

 

Etniko performs original compositions by Farshid, jazz standards, and popular songs with a Latin and Middle-Eastern touch. Farshid Etniko has performed at Fair St. Louis, Lafayette Park Summer Concert Series, Whitaker Jazz Festival, Vail (Colorado) Music Festival, First Night St. Louis, Festival of Nations, Laumeier Sculpture Park Art Fair, and the Pageant; their TV appearances have included FOX 2 Morning News and Show Me St. Louis on KSDK Channel 5. The group was selected as “Best World Music Band” by RFT in 2004 and by KDHX and Playback Magazine in 2005.  For their “World Music, World Art” performance Etniko features musicians Ali Bazargani on bass, keyboard, and setar; Parziz Karandich on violin; Behrooz Karandich on zarb and Persian percussion; and Fardin on setar.

 

There is no admission charge for this event. Refreshments will be served. Funding for this event is being provided by AmerenUE, Missouri Arts Council, and Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis.
